Tabling at pixie panic’s Nerd pride!

Last week I tabled at an art fair on 2nd Ave. at Clay Space and Whitaker Printmakers put on by them and Wildling arts collective. This coming Sunday, I will set up my table again, and I will inform people that they could listen for free to Future Macabre Radio, my original series of Science Fiction radio plays.

To make my booth interactive, I’ll bring my theremin and invite anyone who wishes to to play it. I believe my brother will be able to attend it with me as well. He will be bringing some of his pearler art.

This is a good fit because the most recent episode features a trans character and has a queer love story. “The island of Dr. Vertussis” features a character named Dina, who becomes Dean played by Sam Stark, a Seattle based voice actor.

If you listened to episode six, “I’m a poet” it featured Zala Runa as Libby, a woman who kind of saves the world. Zala will be present at nerd pride playing DND in a live performance improv event at 1.

I also made some new comics in case there is time for me to share them. I share four of them here for you. to see more, You’ll have to come to the event itself. I have a rap about dungeons and dragons that also name drops some Lord of the rings and Diablo stuff And I have a Star Trek villains rap and a history of science fiction piece, and a piece that describes the queer coded villain.

I hope to see you there! 12 at the park blocks in Eugene, Or. I’d like to table at more events. I’ll keep an eye out for more events.

Xoticon, Los Angeles!

Here’s a drawing of members of “mambo diabolico” they have Richard elfman the filmmaker on bongos. Their vocalist Lena Marie was channeling yma sumac as a tribute! Ego Plum also cocmposes music for SpongeBob and the cup head show.
Here’s a drawing of the full band, I experimented with ink and just one color of water colors. I met all the horn players and they were friendly.
The hukilau hotshots were a delightful band! So charming to hear their front person Natalie Mendoza say for nearly every song “I think this is my favorite song we play”

Listen to them on Spotify.
Creepxotica is a side band of a group called “the creepy creeps” listen to them on Spotify! Their songs are not long and jammy, but short and tight!
The martini kings have played at the Oscar’s and the Grammys, their announcer boasted. Many songs were instrumental but gretje sang some songs including “fly me to the moon.”
The tikiyaki orchestra play surf rock with jungle rhythms and vibraphones, fun silly samples pepper the music too.
I went to this fest because my online friend Thea triffid, aka ghoulish gal posted that she would be there. I got to see her play in a band, above and a solo theremin set
I animated a little gif of her hand moving. That’s vibrato!
Click here to see this drawing animated with music added
She wore a few different costumes, so I drew her several times!

There was burlesque, djs and gogo dancers too!

I had such a fun time and I learned a lot from the symposiums/ seminars. I’d love to go again if they have the event again, I actually made several more drawings but I haven’t finished them yet. So there may be a “part 2” to this post!

Halloween retro novelty music

I love silly Halloween novelty songs and horror soundtrack music. Checkout this weeks episode of the retro cocktail hour.

I wrote a song on my album about horror movies and horror tropes. Check it out here,

It was real fun to put together, I scrapped a set of lyrics that I had put together about being an undead person trying to find a date, and based it on a Richard Sala interview and a horror film protagonist who has fallen for a honey trap, I joke that it’s from Shaggy’s perspective. After I saw “ house of the devil.” I put in some theremin and creaking door and pounding sound effects too. Ryan Schmidt provided the drums and played some of the synths in the rhythm too. I hope you enjoy it!

Control Voltage in Portland

I drove to Portland to see the synthesizer store Control Voltage. Can you imagine a store where there are synthesizers and you can try them and talk to experts and ask questions?

Does this photo make you drool? I admit I do not know what 9.9/10ths of these things do.

This was the most fun toy I played with. The delaydelus from Bleep Labs. I got a Thingamagoop from them a few years ago. This thing has a crazy sound. Who needs any effect other than delay and pitch shift? It has a unique form of a “patch bay,” there are eight pins, and if an alligator clip is connected to one or more of the eight pins, it will play one or more samples. The designer says it allows you to “get intimate with your samples.”

This device, the op-1 sounds beautiful, is clearly much more powerful than a Roland groove box, and is battery powered and portable. You can program it on your train ride! The staff said it has been their best seller recently.

This artistic logo was created with nails in the wall and  hundreds of black threads!

A classic theremin! What a beauty.

My primary reason to visit was to try out this new theremin to see if I wanted to purchase it. I decided that no, I definitely do not. This theremin has 32 presets but I didn’t find any of them very useable, they can’t be edited without downloading an app for your iPhone, and the piece seemed very small, plastic and toylike. The antenna is too short! The sensitivity wasn’t to my liking, and I just didn’t like its sound as much as an original theremin. The pitch quantization seemed too good to be true, but I just couldn’t imagine myself playing this theremin.
