I got to see this fun all girl band play at the wow Hall they played originals and a cover of a Chapel Roan song.
Their songs are on Spotify but they are hard to google because of their name. Their Instagram is here
Grrl band at wow hall
They were opening for the best cover band ever! The Major Tomboys!
I can’t recommend them highly enough! They were so fun! Of course Bowie has more wonderful catchy hit songs than almost any other artist and they packed the night with hit after hit played impeccably. “Fame” was a highlight. Notice they have a sax player? She also picked up a flute sometimes. This band totally rocks and they put on a fantastic show 🙂 I’d go again in a heartbeat.
Exciting news, my play “the Ghostbot of Veronica Croft.” will be read in April as part of the NW10 festival held right next door to where Spectrum used to be. it was the first episode of my series “Future Macabre Radio” (and can be listened to at futuremacabe.bandcamp.com) This will be the first time it will be performed with a director and actors live in front of an audience, and the first time one of my plays has been produced live in about 22 years. Auditions are February 1st at OCT on Broadway.
Pay What You Can Preview, Thursday, April 3, OCT · Evening Performances, April 4, 6, 10, 11, 12 · Matinee Performance, April 13 · Playwright Talkback following matinee, Sunday, April 13, OCT
Isaac Paris (playwright, “Ghostbot of Veronica Croft”) is grateful to be involved in his first production at OCT. He is an art teacher at Network Charter School, makes original science fiction audio plays, writes music and plays in a band, and loves his pets.
Thank you to Mary Cruse, Nick Armstrong Crews, and to Naomi Fitter for feedback on this play, Nikki Brackett for interpreting the character, Yeehaw for their support, and the talented cast and crew of the show. See you In April
One of my favorite things to do is go to a festival and try to draw everybody who plays.
I drew many of the bands at project Pabst but I wasn’t able to draw all of them.
More are coming but here is Big Thief, who wrapped up the last night.
Adrienne played with some new band members and played a long jammy style, channeling Neil Young sometimes. She didn’t play the old songs I love but that’s ok because all her new songs still sound like big thief songs and sound pretty good.
My brother gave me a watercolor brush pen from Italy and I used it here and used my homemade acorn ink . Ironing the page had some unexpected results but that’s ok.
Here’s a dump of photos from the month of October!
Some very corny Halloween “poems.” They are acronyms.
These are so dumb.
Of course, they were started with these:
This one is probably objectively the best.
I had students make “ghosts in a jar” and decorate miniature bottles of poison.
Some students painted ghosts on old photos too
I sculpted a skull! My first embroideryHere the ghosts aren’t white, they are black, can you see them? Here’s one of my tributes to Gorey, remember his rhyming advice book? And here’s another, trying to imitate his handwriting. Here was an inktober prompt: “campsite”“Guide book”SnackA tribute to Frankenstein, this is a copper plate etching: dipped in ferric oxcideAnd finally to wrap this up, me performing standup outside in the daytime to seemingly no one.
Charming Disaster is from Brooklyn and put together a pleasant stage show, with a narrative journey, sound effects and cabaret folk songs about witchy things, spells, and haunted forests. There is some clever wordplay in their narrative songs.
Here’s a second illustration, a bit less exaggerated. Recommended if you like the Dresden Dolls, Marian Call, the Decemberists, the tiger lilies.
Jeffrey Lewis is an artist I have had the pleasure to see many times. This year he was touring with a band called Grasping Straws, who were his backing band. They aren’t very similar to his style, they are very psych rock, reminded me a bit of Forget Cassettes. Very Cool that Mallory added some violin to his songs in addition to vocals and keyboards. He played many old favorite songs.
My Brightest Diamond has a beautiful haunting voice. She’s collaborated with many of my favorite artists. Tim Fite, the Decemberists, and she’s on Broadway doing songs with Sufjan Steven’s Broadway show! She played a great set, solo, backed up sometimes by a backing track, but included some props and costume changes. Many of the songs had samples of Sinead O’Connor speaking, I don’t think she played any covers of her, but the whole show seemed to be a tribute to her. She explained how devastated she was to hear that Sinead passed away. I would love to see her play again with a full band. I think she played her guitar with a chord tuning because she seemed to just bang it sometimes and it always sounded great. She sang an honest sad song about how you shouldn’t date an artist, shouldn’t date your manager, shouldn’t date the muscian in your band, shouldn’t date a poet, etc, there seemed to be a reason why you shouldn’t date anybody!
I thought I’d make available my presentation I gave for “Big Read” which was sponsored by Mecca, The Shelton McMurphy House, Books with Pictures and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Shelton McMurphy House gave away 500 copies of “Can’t we Talk About Something More Pleasant” by Rez Chast, a brutally honest and humorous book about aging and dying. Perhaps to get us all thinking and talking about death and difficult emotions through laughter and comics. I’m so glad I was involved.
The pictures here are of comic Artist Lynda Barry who is a big inspiration to me. I had the thought, why not also film myself giving my slideshow/lectures that I make for my high school students. They are interesting and just as good as other YouTubers I watch. So here for your enjoyment and edification is “Super Team.” More are on their way, ok? It seems my head is VERY small and cut off for most of this presentation, oh well.
Here is one on Funk Music and how we can be inspired by it when making visual art.
Here is one on Jazz music and how it can inspire us.
I played off and on again with Kristian Swearingen, here’s his new album. The third track is a cover of an HB telling song. I’m completely uninvolved on this project but it’s made by friends and I wanted to share 🙂
His Seattle band was called Electric Tape. In Alaska the project was a little different and called “Kelsa.” (I played drums for it.)
You can here new tracks from Paper Scissors here. I provided the album artwork for this. See any pareidolia? It’s uncommon for me to release digital art. I also played keyboards on these tracks. Do they sound different than previous paper scissors? We hired a string playerto make it epic and cinematic, there are synthesizers in the mix, and Bruna is added on vocals.
The May show lineup. I 💜 femme daggers “50s housewife” satire persona making music with an electric fan , a telephone and an ironing board. How ironic. One of her songs is about watching “wheel of fortune” with you. It’s so domestic and cute. The April show lineup. Atlas had a real powerful voice. Thy have one song on Spotify. Alexa Ro is on Instagram @alexa.ro.music
Osprey flies the nest is on spotify too!
The June show lineup. Hannah has several albums and is available on Spotify. When I hosted a show in January, I drew each artist on an individual page and gave them the drawingsZiree sun’s music is on Spotify and it’s beautiful! Cloud is a fantastic performer. Cloud Out Loud is what their name is on Spotify. They remind me a bit of Brett Dennen.Amiia Nectar is on Spotify too! Very sexy music 💜 she’s collaborated with me before but we didn’t make recordings yet. she reminds me of Biig Piig
