Save Ferris + Bandulus

The Bandulus play hot smooth soulful ska. Some songs reference old rock and roll like Little Richard. The songs are simple, but bright and fun and have tempo changes and a real groove and positive mood. Their coolest songs might be “The Times That We Had” and “Does that make me a Good Man?”

I think Jeremy assembled a new band with people in Portland. Emma’s back up vocals improve every song and her smiling presence cheers up the crowd. At this show (opening for Save Ferris) they were joined by Shane Connor from the Longshots on Keyboards and didn’t have any horn players.

See this bonus drawing has Curtis on the Bass, and Morgan who played drums a second time. Notice the blue reflection in his hair makes him look like an Archie character… I drew Emma a second time, and there was something good about her expression here but I didn’t finish inking it because I have SO MANY DRAWINGS to add.

Save Ferris were totally fun. What a blast to hear these familiar horn riff again! I think the bass was too loud and that may have been intentional to cover some sloppy playing but we had fun anyway. There were so many smiling faces in the crowd. Save Ferris are way more than just their hit cover of “Come on Eileen.” I love a dozen of their songs, “The World is New,” “I’m not crying for you,” “What you see is what you get,” and I believe their new song “Anything” is just as fun as their old ones. They played “Do I Even Like You” which is a Fugazi cover. “Super spy” and “Everything I want to be” are so epic. Even though the original members aren’t touring with Monique, they still sound like its 1998 again. They played “I Know” from the “10 Things I Hate About You” soundtrack, and even went loud and pop punk heavy for “Mistaken.”

Monique is a charming frontman and she had some fun stage banter for us about how now in these depressing times, we need ska music more than ever! I see they added new summer tour dates, including Seattle and Salem with Warped Tour.DSC_1008.JPG

I’m going to add a bonus drawing because I think Monique is beautiful and this drawing doesn’t show it.  Also, this captures the drummer and the bass player, who switched between an electric bass and a standup bass.DSC_0157.JPG

Legendary New York Jazz band SEX MOB

Cozmic Pizza was blessed with Steven Bernstein, Kenny Wollensen, Tony Sherr and Briggan Krauss: AKA SEX MOB.

This band plays sloppy drunken New Orleans funeral march style, but works in familiar melodies and plays them loosely, as if soaked in booze and squeezed out a slide trumpet. Sometimes they resemble an instrumental Tom Waits track. Kenny (drums) plays some wild stuff, melodically playing sputtered phrases, sometimes making his drum set squeak and rattle, sometimes picking up gongs and soundmakers, and sometimes just hitting hard fast like its punk rock. (He’s played with Norah Jones, John Zorn, and TOM WAITS among many others). The bass player Tony just grooved the whole time, without any piano or guitarist, he is prominent on every song, sometimes playing implied chords and always subtly dancing by himself and smiling. Steven and Briggan play around each other and around the melodies, lurching, swamping, blasting, bellowing. Some songs are dissonant, but all are satisfying in the grand whole: like a complex mix of sour sweet and umami tastes in a complex dish.  I caught a lick from “Adir Adirim” (Balkan Beat Box) and “Clint Eastwood” by The Gorillaz was mixed up with “oh when the saints go marchin in” and sometimes they flirted with maybe almost playing the standard “I Got Rhythm.” In their final medley they whipped out the James Bond theme. I’m sure there were many other in-jokes from jazz and pop music that went over my head.  They also played their own take on songs from Fellini films. This was a beautiful and wild concert and the crowd was satisfied. Most of them relaxed and watched the band’s every move, but a few brave souls danced. Catch them live if you can! Steven said they played Oregon Country Fair in 1984! Wow thats a long time ago. I was 2!

Termination Dust

Termination Dust play honest rock and roll pop songs. I am reminded of so many of my favorite bands, a bit of the raw human emotion but sparse simplicity of The White Stripes and The Moldy Peaches. My favorite songs are “Funeral Bells” and “Haunting Bells.”

Stephanie and Jaybird’s voices circle around each other while Jacob and Chubbz pound away at the bass and the drums.

“Familiar Eyes”

released May 20, 2016

Recorded by Chad Reynvaan at Wattage Studios

Proximity describes a relationship that’s lost its fun and drags on. “This isn’t love its just proximity.” I would like more syntheziers in the mix but there are shining omnichords on  “Funeral Bells” and “Proximity.” The creepy echoed vocals and driving rhythm on Summit Lake recall songs by Ladytron or the Gran Turismo record from the Cardigans. Many songs are about the existential angst of being a young adult in the modern wasteland, kind of an alternate soundtrack to Dan Clowes’ “Ghostworld.” My review may sound gloomy, but really this album is a charm and hits a wide number of emotional places and moods. 9/10

Shivas: The GIF

It wasn’t hard to make this gif of one of my drawings.

I Really should try and make one with arms going up and down and mouths opening and closing.  Maybe I’ll convert a bunch of other old drawings into gifs like this.

Manchino

Manchino play heavy classic sounding rock and roll. I half expected their riffs to turn into the familiar”crazy train,” and sometimes they cover Cream,  but they played originals for us at Sam Bonds. manchino2

Earthquake Hurricane

This talented bunch of portland comics graced us with a hilarious show on valentines day. Marnie was a guest and Cailin Wolff hosted. Katie asked me to draw her tall (so she’s taller than Cailin) and Anthony asked me to make him a dragon. Learn more about them here.DSC_0411.JPGDSC_0409.JPGDSC_0410.JPGDSC_0406.JPG

EUGENE WOW HALL Egotones, The Shivas

This delightful show, sponsored by Eugene Musicians Against Sexual Violence had psychedelic oil and water and ink and paint projections on the wall throughout the whole show provided by Mad Alchemy. To make these drawings, I inked, then penciled, then worked in images of oil and water shows in the background.

I also added some gentle layers of lime and onion prints from my work at Mecca. ( This was fun, notice the “shivasshivasshivas” written in the background. Then I took a layer and made it super dark, put that over the regular layer, then erased circle shaped holes around their heads. If I had been less than confidant with my drawing, I sure could distract from messy details (such as sloppy hands) with some of this psychedelic mess, huh?

shivas2

The Shivas play classic surfy rock and roll. Some tracks sound like the Kinks, others like the Doors or the Velvets, they all sound catchy and awesome. There are so many classic tracks. I love to listen to them while I drive, and I sing them in my head all the time. “You know what to do,” “you make we wanna die,” “Thrill yr Idols,” “baby I need you,” and many catchy more songs.DSC_1013.JPG

My favorite is probably “big mama casio.” (the swirl of the bands name looks pretty cool with the swirl of the oil and ink behind it! You might have to look hard to see the onion prints!

Here is this illustration in a more traditional style. I had a fun time with detail in the shirts.

EGOTONES play fierce, tried and true surf rock with the occasional wurlitzer keyboard riff and funny samples from old movies much like Man… or Astroman? I will definitely be checking them out more. The above drawing is superimposed over an oil and watercolor photograph. This next one I started filling it in with marker.

Now here is the final piece with shading and full colors.

There were other great bands too! I really enjoyed “the blimp”  (riffs reminded me of Zappa) but I wasn’t able to draw them. Psycho Magic is a great band too!
