Jeffrey Lewis and Los bolts

Jeffrey played for us and shared his comics the day before thanksgiving at the wandering goat. It was a wonderful show. Mem and Brent were a very tight band, providing perfect back up vocals and patiently waiting for their turn to play even if Jeff sometimes does long poems and comic presentations that don’t involve them. Sometimes Jeff is doing a Leonard cohen/shel Silverstein/Woody Guthrie for the current generation (with a hearty dose of humor and existential dread) and sometimes it’s a complete freak out with a jammy wild improvisational style. Jeffrey Alexis is a national treasure. AND he makes comics too. Wow.

Here is a more expiramental version of a drawing…. and here are some kaleidoscopes I made with pixelmator. Now, I’m sure someday I’ll look back on this as a silly waste of time but by gosh I think they are fun now.

Trimtab

This band rocks hard, great drummer, great compositions. Post rock in the veins of Euphone,  Transam. A little bit of thrash and dub tossed in, reminded me of 4 out of 5 doctors all grown up. Made me want to listen to Karate and Dub Trio again.

Psyrup

One of the heaviest loudest bands I’ve ever seen live. Like Hella and Transam and 80s action movie soundtracks. Very riff based and plodding. Music for driving a Mach truck into a volcano. Listen here.

Just as a bonus here are some kaleidoscopes based on the text at the bottom, which was very fun to draw.

PALEONS

Paleons play huge thundering spacey post rock! Shimmering, shattering, convalescing, coalescing, brobdignian riffs! They have an analog synth player! I often can’t hear what he’s doing under the volume of the cymbals and the huge guitar amps but… the gear is cool.

Pretty Drunk

This goofy punk folk band from Eugene puts on a hell of a party. The addition of cello and accordion are appreciated. They busk and play in parties and local bars. Can you tell this is three pieces of paper? He he he

Piano men at the Wayward lamb

There was a fun piano pop show in downtown Eugene with two talented pianists.

Vendana Shiva

Vendana Shiva is a controversial figure. Her stance against GMOs has received a lot of criticism but I appreciated some of the things she said, such that we could boycott Coke a Cola to send a message! The corporations are merging, giving us fewer targets to oppose! Her scarf looked totally cool and was a fun challenge to draw.

Fruit Prints at Mecca

Here is a fun project you can do at home with kids: printing with fruit.

We painted with tempura and watercolor paints on to a piece of cut fruit, we used strawberries, bananas, oranges, star fruit, a lime and an onion. We found that limes and starfruits worked the best.

Makes cool wrapping paper

You can even make a landscape, as one enterprising young student did.

Human Ottoman

This band has a new Cellist! Julian Kosanovic, who also plays in Portland Cello Project! I played with them at the Eugene Cider Festival and they are playing November 17 at the Doug Fir with Three for Silver!

I made some kaleidoscopes out of my drawing. They look so trippy and cool!

Tango alpha tango and Pancho + the Factory

A hot mess of a band in every possible way. The Elvis like vocals, sexually charged lyrics and full lush sound (with three back up singers) make this a genuine and passionate party band.

This drawing is less cartoony and in the “rotoscope” style. With moody lighting!

This is one of the greatest living garage rock bands. Their heavy bluesy rock hits the spot every time. Listen here. Nathan trueb and co bring it every time.
