Janice and Nate, episode 1

Many of you have already seen episode zero- its The Smoking pun! featuring Janice Jester and Nate the Knight.
Chris Green suggested I write a longer narrative for them.
I’ve already grown attached to them and I hope to produce mini-zines of their adventures. I will let you know when they are available, and post “episodes” as I write them.

Silvero, G string Orchestra, Kill the BAND

G string Orchestra
I do not have a cd review yet for this band, but their new album is very good. I wanted to show you this drawing.
SILVERO

Silvero (Bend, OR)
Spiritual Vamp
Recorded at Olympia, WA at dub narcotic.
engineered by ephraim nagler
mastered by carl saff
Nella D-vocals, James Ryan Adams-guitar, vocals. James Bigknife-drums, Annika Kat-bass

Crashing cymbals, overdriven guitars and a powerful female voice are the three primary sonic elements that punch you in the face on this debut EP from Bend, Oregon’s “Silvero.”

On the opening track, (Longhornz) there is a funky rhythm and cowbell that will make you pump your fist in the air. Perhaps a radio edit could cut the first minute of slow building intro and just rock right out the gates.
Nella D enchants with her confidence and fucked up lyrics. “Normal boys are so mundane… They can’t give me what I want.” She condemns normality and praises insanity and addiction, shouting “We’re addicted to life’s afflictions.”
“Give me what I want to hear, cuz this girl’s got a special ear.”
The first half of Terrebonne Honey; “If I die let me die in the army of the lord” hasn’t got much in the way of lyrics, but evokes mood in spades. Her voice is looped around the hook, each time she sings it, the subtle variations shine through. The second half picks up and chugs along to tremendous crescendo.

The third track is a Randy Newman Cover, “Guilty.” This band seems to own it and renew it. “Bad man” is also a cover, from the Oblivians, should I have heard of them?

“Overturf” contains some sweetness. Vem kan segla in Swedish and the last is the heaviest, most fearsome grunge, yet its a singalong in the style of 50s rock n roll. The album ends with odd reverbed twinkling, which is just the way it began, perhaps it was designed so that it could be played on repeat. Bass player Annika Kat helps out on the vocals on this hypnotic song.

Most of the tracks have lots of space, a minimalism that is refreshing. My only suggestion would be that Nella’s voice could be clearer if the production was more clean. We hear every amp buzzing and Jim’s careful, reserved drumming isn’t lost in a sludge of overdubs. This bare bones approach to blues is part of what made The Black Keys so exciting back in the 2000s.The listener pays more attention to the words Nina says, as she sometimes makes us wait for eternities between lyrics. The band ebbs and flows through slow dragging tempos and powerful upbeat rhythms. These songs are long, with many changes and variations. This album hits on all four cylinders. Its a gem, that accurately reflects the sound of the band playing live.

Kill the band (NYC)
Mock Bottom
Recorded and mixed by Jimmy Goodman at Leopard Studio
mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling sound.

KIlly Dwyer infuses each word with inflection and melodrama. The band is consistent and competent whether they are emulating heavy rock, country, lounge, a funk – porn groove or even gospel. Like in their live performace, songs stop abruptly sometimes to have a lounge breakdown or for the band members to indulge themselves or fight.
You can certainly forget that the drum sounds are coming from someones mouth, its Nicholas Fox providing all those percussive sounds. Blair Frowner’s saxophone provides the perfect cheesy ambiance in the second and third tracks.
Fourth track “See Something say something” has that mad glee that Killy is known for. It is a twisted children’s song. The premise is absurd, throwing a cat into the river because you think its a bomb, yet the song’s protagonist must realize it is a cat, as she frequently gives hints that she knows the truth. “I had to stop that bomb from meowing down to zero!” Everyone who rides crowded subways will recognize the situation and the paradox that their catch phrase asks you to report suspicious packages, yet there is no one to report to because budget cuts have removed personnel from many of the subway stations.

On Mock Bottom she makes the joke “On a scale of Lindsay Lohan to Mel Gibsen, I’m a Charlie Sheen.” This is another song about being a tortured, alcoholic artist, or wanting to play that stereotype.
The best track is Ben KIngsley, and sums up the artistic frustration minorities must feel when they are played by actors in films. “No one respects a retard, unless he’s played by Leonardo Dicaprio,” There something so wonderful about humorous, angry lyrics, sung beautifully in harmony; through the sarcasm a touching message shines through.

There was no need to include two versions of “Girl Balls” and “Don’t Attack Me With Your Happiness.” Those are fine recordings, that could be available as downloads for fans on the internet who just can’t get enough Kill the Band. Repetition is tricky when you are doing comedy music, it seems fine live, because some audience members will miss the joke the first time, so a band becomes used to playing their songs with lyrical repetition. If the band had to have two versions, the jokes should be different, the lyrics should have more variation, the variation was all in the mood, and that wasn’t different enough for me.

It is neat to hear the bonus track “I Turned You Gay.” which dates form an earlier era when Killy was always performing solo. She provides the percussion and backing music with her voice into a looping pedal.

This album is fun and weird, and captures well the band’s live set. Something about it certainly encapsulates New York City. Track 5 is a sketch about the frustrations of recording in a studio. Mike Milazzo (guitar) gets to show us his angry voice. There is some of that in “Clone U” as well, with the sound engineer chipping in that he will “fix that in the mix.” Yet, he didn’t. Its a joke, its meta- its postmodern, an album that knows it’s an album.

For fans of ??? Killy Dwyer? Its pretty unique, not much like other humorous rock acts.

Magic the Gathering cards I’d like to see.

Dear Wizards of the Coast. I would love a job designing or developing magic cards. It is the most beautiful, fun and challenging game I have ever played. I think about it too much. Thank you for the many years of enjoyment it has given me, and the friendships I have made through your game. If you want to hire me, send me an email or call.

“We make do with what we have. It’s our will that determines our success, not our luck.” Argos Kos

Shouldn’t be too powerful if its costed at 4.

The other name for this was “Motley Assembly”

This would be good in Past In Flames combo decks… Bwah ha ha!

This would be fun in a Blue Red Artifact build with

Green gets a wrath of God?

signets and Trinket Mages.

What if a planeswalker had 2 ults? I really love the first ability, and the third references Ob Nixilus the original.

This would have lots of fun combos. It doesn’t work on creatures or planeswalkers though to prevent brokeness. oh it should say “non creature artifact” probably.

Combo with It that Betrays and Artizan of Kozilek! Would go great in Myr combo decks!

Well, what do you think? Post comments!

Alaska Tour, Denali, Trapper Creek Music Fest

I am excited to announce I’m going on a short tour!

August 11, Usibelli Pavilion, Tanana Valley Fair- 12 pm 10$ to get into the fair.

August 15- Marlin with Craig Brookes of Paper Scissors and many special guests!
9pm, free (donations accepted)

August 17 Panorama Pizza between Denali and Cantwell, 11pm Free ( donations  for gas accepted) with Sabe Flores on Cello and playing her originals

August 18  unknown time- unknown price. Trapper Creek Music fest. with Sabe!

My show lately has had my original comics and stand up comedy, as well as my jazzy piano originals and old timey banjo tunes. I have been playing covers from Tom Waits, the Decemberists, the Beatles, the Kinks, Leonard Cohen, Weezer and more!
Sabe brings a real touch of class to my songs, and she’s a super star who has honed her chops playing in numerous local bands including The Bacuntry Bruthers.

Larry and His Flask, Barney McClure Combo, with Greta Metassa, Naked Men, Pj Franco and the Burnouts

The talented, delightful Naked Men! featuring members of Not enough Flannel and Eating For Two. I think I’m getting better at drawing faces that are on the chubby side in a cute and flattering way. Someday I’ll draw a sax right.

Here is the wonderfully zany anarchistic PJ Franco and the Burnouts. They are raising money via kickstarter, to fund their lower 48 tour. They are playing on the warped tour!  They are amazingly fun and funny.

Here is Barney McClure combo with the fantastic Greta Metassa.(vocals) Clipper Anderson, (bass) Brad Boal,  (drums) Brad Dutz, (percussion) Keith Karns (trumpet). Greta did lot sof fun vocalese and improvisational hula hoops with her voice. It was especially delightful when she sang along with her husband Clipper. Clipper is one of the best bass players I have ever seen. Brad Dutz got many chuckles from the audience with his creative percussion. Fantastic band-

And here is Larry and his Flask. This was a difficult drawing because the performers were moving about so much and so fast, and the audience was the sweatiest, wildest, nakedest, moshiest group in the smallest space I’ve ever seen- but some of the drawings are ok. They played amazing rock and roll on banjo and guitars. wit ha stand up bass. The mics didn’t work sometimes, but it didn’t matter because the room was so small, we could hear everyone anyway. When they picked up a trumpet and trombone and played tight- almost mariachi style melodies it was a glorious moment indeed! I can’t imagine this band being any better. What a show! Like Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show- turned up to 11- catchy,  not too harsh, they can definitely play their instruments well, and sing in key,  truly a high energy show for all ages to enjoy (except for a few “fuck cancer!” lyrics)

Southern Culture on the Skids, The Woggles and Faun Fables

A couple years ago I watched one of my favorite recording bands play in a warehouse in Brooklyn. SCOTS put on a fantastic live show still, though they have been going strong for 28 years. Rick Miller, Dave Hartman, Mary Huff, and Tim Barnes had a guest play theremin. They did not hand out fried chicken.

Their opening act was the Woggles, a very fun wacky 60s style garage band. Also drawn here is a group called Faun Fables, who opened for Rasputina. I didn’t like their songs much, but I drew this cool name for them so thought I’d share.

More drawings coming soon.

Netherfriends, Angry Young and Poor and more!

We fondly remember wonderful music and memories, Angry YOung and Poor has come to an end again. Though disappointing that Work and Sauy Yoda both canceled, amazing performances from Zingaro, Radioactivists, Netherfriends, Kizmet and the Phineas Gage more than made up for it.

Kizmet was really wonderful. Folk minimalism, two part harmonies and beat boxing. Reminds me of one of my favorite bands Coco Rosie.

Dante is a furiously talented Ukulele Player who tours Alaska. I saw him at Trapper Creek and at the Pub in Fairbanks. He plays swing and jazzy originals. he wasn’t at AYP, i just happened to find a drawing I made of him.

Pretty Birds that Kill: also didn’t play, but here is a drawing of them. 🙂

Hannah Corral: my hero, here she is rocking a guitar at Ivory Jacks with the Ba’Cuntry Bruthers

Jackie Chan!! a reunion of Three Chord Ho! Kendra, Jody and Amanda. they played a three song set, I don’t think any of them were old 3 Chord Ho! songs.

Unsupervised played rock covers, they are playing the fair too 8:30 August 8.

Netherfriends: now just one member Shawn Rosenblatt. Awesome new material, guitar scales sound vaguely Asian. He was once such a sweet, sentimental pop act, the new stuff is darker but highly enjoyable.

Freddie Fingas played a face melting set early in the day including “the star spangled Banner”

Radioactivists are super amazing! Delightful pop rock with a very talented lead guitarist named Dhani. He doesn’t play like a teenage kid, he plays like an experienced old blues guy. Eli their bass player sang two songs he had written, both were impassioned and fantastic!
It was truly inspiring to see young musicians playing so well! I thoroughly enjoyed them. They are playing again (and for the last time? as members are leaving to college)  on July 20 at College Coffee house, and then as a three piece at the fair Friday August 10 at noon.
