Annie Where the Sun Don’t Shine, Milk and the Honeys

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/6fd/6122708/files/2015/01/img_0075.jpg

This unique Alaskan band has a family at its core: Jesse’s brother James plays drums, His wife sings and plays ukulele, and now they have Jeremy (from Savvy) on banjo, Sarah Mitchell on vocals, and Patrick Mailloux on bass. They played perky reggae versions of pop songs and sexy poppy originals!/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/6fd/6122708/files/2015/01/img_0072.jpgOnce Annie was alone, then she was joined by Meghan on Harmonica and Eli on guitar. Now eli plays an electric, they have Rebecca File on a miniature acoustic Bass and Hard hitting Punk drummer Matt Harris on the drums. They ROCK now, but they don’t play often because Annie lives in Juneau, but soon it will be Washington D.C.

Totally by accident, my friend’s Paul and Deven’s Christmas card is in the background. oops.

Can you believe another CB has come and gone? It was a fun party though I could only be there for the first half. (I’m working on a movie). I am thankful for Kyle Batley for these incredible photos! Some of the photos of me performing are by Elliot Wilson or Amanda Bent.

I played to a crowd of about 60. Teens and young adults love the live comics. I performed the “Beard Rap,” some family friendly stand up Comedy, and a fast forwarded version of “The History of Vaudeville and Performance Comics.” I Played a banjo song “You don’t need money to have fun,” which is one of my favorites from the new album, and an old song “The Anthropic Principle Lullabye.”

The enigmatic “Squatters Temple” photo by Kyle Batley

Squatter’s Temple played a very hard rocking version of their songs. “people can’t read and people can’t write” and “hop on one foot hop on the other” and many other of his odd lyrics will be stuck in your head for days. He is getting better as he keeps at it, and I recommend you catch him playing live near you.

The Phineas Gage play socially conscious hip hop with a powerful live band sound. They are incredible, not to be missed, especially if you like lyrics that have something thoughtful to say. Raif and Sonny Golden spar off each other with a charming rivalry.

100_2160

100_2156

Usually at these festivals i try to draw 50+ people, take their photo and let them keep the drawings. Some people collect them every year. I could only stay a little while, so I couldn’t continue the tradition this year.

Jazz Farm and a color vision of the stage

Jazz Farm and a color vision of the stage

Jazz Farm (or Jass Pharm… or some other spelling) played a chill set including the old standard “Goodbye Pork Pie hat. They are two talented musicians who happen to be married with kids. Alan used to play in Stov and Amanda used to play in “3 Chord Ho!” Sometimes they play at the Marlin or Ivory Jacks with a full band and get their Gypsy jazz on.

The next big Fairbanks Festival is Angry Young and Poor. It will be at Ester Community Park on July 15th. I will not be playing, I am traveling to Homer.

Netherfriends, Angry Young and Poor and more!

We fondly remember wonderful music and memories, Angry YOung and Poor has come to an end again. Though disappointing that Work and Sauy Yoda both canceled, amazing performances from Zingaro, Radioactivists, Netherfriends, Kizmet and the Phineas Gage more than made up for it.

Kizmet was really wonderful. Folk minimalism, two part harmonies and beat boxing. Reminds me of one of my favorite bands Coco Rosie.

Dante is a furiously talented Ukulele Player who tours Alaska. I saw him at Trapper Creek and at the Pub in Fairbanks. He plays swing and jazzy originals. he wasn’t at AYP, i just happened to find a drawing I made of him.

Pretty Birds that Kill: also didn’t play, but here is a drawing of them. 🙂

Hannah Corral: my hero, here she is rocking a guitar at Ivory Jacks with the Ba’Cuntry Bruthers

Jackie Chan!! a reunion of Three Chord Ho! Kendra, Jody and Amanda. they played a three song set, I don’t think any of them were old 3 Chord Ho! songs.

Unsupervised played rock covers, they are playing the fair too 8:30 August 8.

Netherfriends: now just one member Shawn Rosenblatt. Awesome new material, guitar scales sound vaguely Asian. He was once such a sweet, sentimental pop act, the new stuff is darker but highly enjoyable.

Freddie Fingas played a face melting set early in the day including “the star spangled Banner”

Radioactivists are super amazing! Delightful pop rock with a very talented lead guitarist named Dhani. He doesn’t play like a teenage kid, he plays like an experienced old blues guy. Eli their bass player sang two songs he had written, both were impassioned and fantastic!
It was truly inspiring to see young musicians playing so well! I thoroughly enjoyed them. They are playing again (and for the last time? as members are leaving to college)  on July 20 at College Coffee house, and then as a three piece at the fair Friday August 10 at noon.

Pub League

Pub League, Fairbanks, AK.
by Isaac Paris

What is Pub League? 20 musicians are put into five groups of four,  and expected to come up with a 20 minute set of material in a single afternoon at our local establishment Ivory Jacks. The goal is to forge new relationships and expand musical talents through exposure to new styles. Creativity, co-operation, leadership skills and time management are of course put to the limit. It’s just like being in a real band on fast forward; as there’s no time to practice but there’s a decent draw with 20 musicians and their friends packing the place. There is a competition, with awards going to best band, best vocalist and best instrumentalist, but tongues are firmly in cheeks and fun is more important than winning.
Pub League encourages you to dig long abandoned styles and influences out of the closet and enjoy a fresh perspective with new faces,” Craig Brookes of Paper Scissors.
I myself am a veteran of Pub League, with three previous adventures under my belt, this time I found myself paired with three people I had never played with before, and we got a late start. The fast paced nature and a desire to please an audience with something familiar leads to playing covers. A previous  winner played an epic mashup of Van Halen’s  “Jump” and Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight.” I may have forgot to mention this was sung as a duet into a vocoder. This was Manboylovecrush69athotmaildotcom featuring Caleb Kuntz of Work, Ephy Wheeler of Feeding Frenzy,  Ben Adamson of The Brine, Casey Smith of Thought Trade, Andrew Paris of Night of the Iguana and Chris Meurlott of The Scurvies.
With that success in mind I suggested to our band that we play some old songs, I imagined a mash up of “Them There Eyes” performed by Billie Holliday and Louis Prima, among many others, and “Digital Love” by Daft Punk. What we ended up doing was playing the old song as an electro jam- and the 90’s hit as an “old timey number” with ukulele and an affected “Loius Armstrong” intonation, of course, both “covers” were radical departures from the original’s melody and timing.
A comment about not being able to find a song on the internet due to a confusion on whether it was Lil Wayne featuring someone or someone featuring Lil Wayne gave us out band name: Lil Wayne (feat. Lil Wayne) which tickled us pink.
At a previous pub league my band Cock Sauce had success with a hip hop song via a writing exercise where 4 or more lyricists write whatever they feel like on a piece of paper and pass it around in a circle. This results in a disjointed “exquisite corpse” style rap, which can be awkward or hilarious, but is perfect for the fast pace and low expectations of Pub League.  So, within an hour we had some ridiculous raps about Buddhists, janitors, contortionists, sexual innuendo and plenty of in-jokes about our friends in other bands.
Hannah Corral of the Ba’cuntry Bruthers encountered a slight disaster at her band’s rehearsal: there was no microphone, no drum set and only a single guitar among four members and so they agreed to be a 8th grade lunch room cover band, Brutal Hate covering hits that were popular when they were 11 and emphasizing their characters in an improvised skit to hide their lack of rehearsal on their instruments.
“I had a blast, its always fun meeting new people and combining different tastes in music, that is what helps you grow as an artist,”  said Dan Vogel of the “real band” Paragraphs. Pub League really wouldn’t exist without the efforts of Connor Rainy, who organizes and makes the phone calls. Are there other pub leagues out there in other towns under a different names? Write me and tell me about them at strangecharm99@gmail.com
