PALEONS

Paleons play huge thundering spacey post rock! Shimmering, shattering, convalescing, coalescing, brobdignian riffs! They have an analog synth player! I often can’t hear what he’s doing under the volume of the cymbals and the huge guitar amps but… the gear is cool.

Betty and the Babes

What a delight to catch Bettreena Jaeger’s band: they released recordings as “Betty and the Boy” but the other night at Old Nick’s it was Betty and the Babes.

Her voice sometimes could remind someone of Joanna Newsome and Beth Gibbons. There are beautiful arrangements of the strings played by Michelle and Nanci. Wearing costumes as ghouls made it especially fun for me to draw. I was entranced by the music and delighted by the “Nightmare Before Christmas” cover, “Sally’s Song.” Cool Inks, and fun to use grey as a color.

As a fun bonus, I was playing with an app that lets me make kaleidoscopes out of my drawings 🙂

Era Coda, Saffron, Ghost Tour, Jor-Dan

I was invited to a private party where bands played inside a living room. These bands are so delightful. Era Coda plays accessible mathy rock. Its delightful.image1-1

Jor-Dan plays electro rock. It’s huge and loud and sounds shimmering!

Saffron plays heavy grungy rock. It’s catchy, but has a sharp edge.

Ghost Tour plays pop with keyboards and sometimes horns. some songs are sung by Olive and some are sung by Andy.

Pancho and the Factory, Laura Palmer’s Death Parade

PAncho and the Factory are a fun, Eugene based, party band at hifi lounge! They have a real B-52s meets Rocky Horror Picture Show vibe, with makeup and decorations and sexy songs! Check them out here

Highly recommended!

Their opener was doom country Velvet Underground-esque Laura Palmer’s Death Parade. There are many bands in Austin, Texas that sound like this, including Cold Dead Space, and Ringo Death Star.

I spelled her name wrong. Oops! Always look at the flyer! I also performed comedy reading my comics, and we had burlesque and circus performances by Josephine DeLove, Invincible Vince, and Jon Deline. Thanks Hi-Fi Lounge for a fantastic show, let’s do it again sometime!

Jay Shingle and Jesse whitehead.

Two comics who made me chuckle at a local comedy show, both are Oregon based. Jay shingle and Jesse whitehead. Jay is something different, punching comedy to the limits of performance art! Follow him @jayshinglefunny on Twitter!

Comedians

I went to two comedy shows in one day! Here are my drawings.

There was a graduation celebration for Leigh Anne Josheway’s comedy writing class. Jeff, Bernie, Susan and Bethany were all doing comedy for the first time!  Susan is an aerobics instructor and had us cracking up with her stories of her childhood.  Bethany claimed to be a “feminist flight attendant” who enjoys keeping people from accessing airline bathrooms with the beverage cart. The pepper haired man in the bottom right is Jeff Jaesch.

Then I went to the wayward lamb for “The Best F*cking Comedy Show Ever” with Alex Rios, Seth Milstein, George Baltzer, Caitlin Weierhouser and Beth Pinkerton.

George recently returned from New Zealand.

Beth tells erotic stories and claims to “love offensive humor.” She won Eugene’s best stand up comedian in 2015.

Caitlin is a total pro, full of silliness, rage and absurdity. She creates her own genre of performance art comedy. She is unique and ferocious.

Alex is Portland based. He’s not afraid to weird an audience out and make us laugh out of awkward embarrassment. His Twitter is @RiosHoneybear

Evan Greer, Ari and her Banjo, Beat Alice

Evan plays intelligent folk music: about unions, the importance of sharing, environmentalism and peace.  They played a Phil Ochs cover, “love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal.” I have had that song stuck in my head ever since, especially the chilling final line, “now I’m older and wiser, and that’s why I’m turning you in.” Check them out online at evangreer.org

I enjoyed Ari and her banjo, she is playing at my vaudeville show In April. She plays fingerpick style with great control! Beat Alice was a very confessional and humorous songwriter.

“Iceberg Social Club” live from Eugene, Or.

I played a show here in Eugene at the Wandering Goat, opening for Eleinvaders, an indie jazz swing band.  Thanks for watching! I’m so lucky to have Shane Connor from the Longshots on tenor sax.

and as a bonus, here we are playing “Stanford Prison Experiment”

Jargon and Cambrian Explosion

Jargon is a garage rock band from Eugene. They mix it up by sampling familiar music sometimes but playing it live on their guitars and bass. They played a theremin without a volume antennae, just coming near it sometimes.
Didn’t I make their lettering look awesome? Cambrian explosion is a drone noise sorcerer music post rock band from Portland. They also play a theremin.

I recall some of their songs had oriental and Egyptian sounding scales, and others had a very heavy dub sound like Dub Trio. I apolgize that this drawing is not up to snuff. This really isn’t as good as my usual stuff. For one thing. There is just a red square shape where a guy’s torso should be, the words are illegible and so much of the image is just filled in black. I’m sorry guys, I let you down.  I pledge to make the next 100 better.

“You don’t need money to have fun” at No Shame Eugene.

http://youtu.be/qLSBirLt2sk
Here I am playing banjo and singing a funny song at the atrium building in Eugene. It’s a fun theatre, anything goes performance space. I’ve made some good friends here. They post sketches, bellydance,  musicians and the rantings of angry people at their YouTube channel.
